Production of Moulds and Dies is necessary for manufacturing plastic and sheet steel parts respectively. This tooling requires understanding their designing and knowledge of production techniques. Other than this knowledge, you need a number of machines for manufacturing this Tooling.

The designing of these tools is done considering the raw material to be processed and the procedures to be done. For sheet metal parts, the thickness of materials may govern the different clearances in punch and die. The operations may involve blanking, piercing, drawing, embossing etc. In moulding of plastics the considerations are the type of material used, shapes, shrinkage in the material and number of cavities essential. The design of the dies and moulds may be simple or very intricate depending upon the process to be done or manufacturing of the parts for which the tooling will be used.

Generally, these tools are produced in a Tool Room, which has some elementary machinery expected to carry out the machining and milling operations. The simple machines essential will include lathes, milling machines, Drill presses, Spark erosion machines, inside, external and floor grinding machines etc. In addition, there is need of different cutting, grinding and sharpening tools wanted for tooling up the different processes.

The Dies and mould have different parts. Most of the parts are produced according to the component to be made. Some regular parts can be bought out. All parts, according to the design, will be assembled together to make a Die or Mould ready for going into production.

The various parts for tooling of the dies and moulds are produced working with the specified die- steels. Each part will follow a sequence of procedure to be machined.

After the machining is over, the parts are heat-treated to get the necessary hardness. The hardening process mainly involves hardening and then tempering process. After heat remedy, the components may be ground and polished wherever required.

When all the parts are ready, these will 1st be sub assembled and then finally the full dies or moulds are assembled to make the tooling ready. The assembled dies and moulds are very first tried out for doing the procedures or moulding the components in order to ensure that the tooling is correct, ahead of releasing them to carry out the production.

Many manufacturing companies have their own set ups for designing and manufacturing of the Mould and Dies. In big organization having own facilities of an in-house tool rom is an benefit. It is much easier to maintain the tools if any part of the die set or mould goes incorrect. The production and tool room individuals are aware of the parts that may wear out or give way for the duration of production; they will keep them spare so that the tooling is quickly rectified devoid of taking much time and thus avoiding the loss of production.

Those companies, which do not have their own Toolroom, have to depend on the outside. In the process, it is more inconvenient to rectification of the tooling with no losing production.  Generally, a lot of time is lost due to mailing and getting back the tooling after repairs.
